Special Programs

The English Programs for Internationals works with groups to design English language programs tailored for their specific needs, goals, and time frames. We have expertise in providing training institutes for ESL and EFL teachers. Additionally, we have designed and executed language and culture programs for groups who want to improve their English by immersing themselves in the culture in ways not provided by our regular programs. These programs can provide a combination of English reading, writing , speaking, and listening classes; computer classes; and TOEFL preparation classes. We have also worked with academic units at the university and professional contacts in the community to provide student contact with specific academic and professional disciplines.

Outside the classroom, the USC campus, the city of Columbia, and the surrounding areas provide students a wealth of recreational and hands-on opportunities for improving their English language and their understanding of American culture. Day trips to Charleston, SC., one of the most historic cities in the U.S.; Carowinds, an amusement park in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Myrtle Beach, S.C., a shopping and amusement center with one of the prettiest beaches in the U.S., are always well received. In addition, canoe trips in Columbia's Congaree Swamp; tours of the South Carolina State Museum; behind the scenes visits to the Riverbanks Zoological and Botanical Gardens; plays and concerts by local and visiting artists; and university and city sporting events provide insights into American culture.

If interested in a special program, please contact the EPI Director. The curriculum of each EPI Special Program is designed specifically for the program participants, be they bankers, engineers, or teachers. EPI will prepare a proposal for consideration, according to specifics presented by the group sponsor.
